About Grounded Therapy

Hello!

Hi! We’re Hillary Perlman and Alex Tomback, the co-founders of Grounded Therapy. We started Grounded in 2020 as two Columbia-trained therapists who shared a simple belief: therapy should feel human, supportive, affirming, and accessible to the people who need it.

What began as a small practice has grown into a team of licensed therapists supporting clients across New York, New Jersey, and Texas, both virtually and from our Manhattan office.

At the heart of Grounded is the idea that therapy should feel like a space where you can show up fully as yourself. We believe you are the expert on your own life, and our role is to help guide, support, and walk alongside you through whatever you’re navigating. Whether you’re coming to therapy for the first time or returning to it in a new season of life, we’re here to help you feel understood, grounded, and supported along the way.

WHAT MAKES GROUNDED DIFFERENT

  • Every Grounded therapist is trained in LGBTQIA+ affirming care. Not as a specialty someone added to their profile as a foundation of how we all work. Queer and trans clients won't spend sessions educating their therapist. We provide letters of support for gender-affirming surgeries, work with all relationship structures, and are genuinely kink-aware and sex-positive.

  • Couples therapy at Grounded is open to every relationship structure from monogamous and non-monogamous, polyamorous, triads, kink and BDSM dynamics, and couples where one or both partners are engaged in sex work. You won't spend the session justifying how you love.

  • Getting paired with the right therapist matters more than getting the next available appointment. Our free consultation isn't just a formality it's how we make sure you feel good about the fit before anything starts. Credentials, specialties, personality, and lived experience all factor in.

  • Our therapists are trained in EMDR, Accelerated Resolution Therapy, Somatic Experiencing, Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, DBT, IFS, Narrative Therapy, and more. We also offer Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy in partnership with Journey Clinical for clients where other approaches haven't been enough.

  • Grounded is in-network with Aetna and UMR Top Tier. We verify your benefits before your first session, no surprises about cost. Sliding scale fees are available for sessions not covered by insurance, because cost shouldn't be the reason someone doesn't get care.

  • In-person sessions at our Manhattan office. Virtual therapy across New York, New Jersey, and Texas. No waitlist. A free first consultation with no commitment required before you're ready to begin.

  • Anti-oppressive, person-centered, and grounded in the belief that you are the expert on your own life. Our therapists understand how identity, culture, race, faith, and lived experience shape mental health and bring that understanding to every session.
