Hi, I’m Justin Vahla

Therapist

I'm a licensed psychotherapist (LMFT-LP) and a graduate of the California Institute of Integral Studies, where I received my Master's in Counseling Psychology. I work with individuals, couples, and families navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, life transitions, and questions of identity and purpose. I also have particular expertise working with artists and performers, a part of this work I find especially meaningful.

My training spans psychodynamic, relational, and transpersonal approaches, as well as hypnotherapy, sex therapy, and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) for trauma. My practice is grounded in liberation-based psychology and a multicultural perspective. I am bilingual in English and Spanish and proficient in French and Portuguese. In addition to my clinical training, I am a certified Reiki Master, a yoga teacher, a performing artist, and a tarologist, and I can integrate these practices for clients seeking more holistic or transpersonal approaches to healing.

Three words I would use to describe myself as a therapist: warm, creative, and intuitive. I work best with clients who are curious about the therapeutic process and willing to try different approaches. That curiosity keeps me on my toes and makes the work genuinely interesting for both of us.

In sessions, I tend to prioritize what is emerging in the present moment. What thoughts, feelings, and dynamics are showing up right now. I see the session as a place to explore different ways of being before taking them out into the world, so I stay as present and curious as possible. There is no greater joy in this work than witnessing a client arrive at a moment of deeper insight they did not see coming. Those moments never get old.

To stay grounded outside of sessions, I lean on embodiment practices. Yoga, pilates, and distance running all help me connect my breath, mind, and body and literally shake off stress. Little stressors tend to move to the wayside when you are just trying not to fall off a reformer or trip on a rogue tree root.
